Areas to Drink – Lisbon Bars
BAIRRO ALTO is a picturesque working class quarter dating from the 16th century that has traditionally been the city’s bohemian haunt of artists and writers. Behind colorful and graffiti-ridden fa?ades is a multitude of sleek bars and stylish alternative fashion shops that stay open until late at night. The Lisbon bars are small, cheap and funky, most people stand outside on the street with drink in hand rather than drink inside the bars, during the summer months the streets are heaving with locals and tourists. If you are planning to go out in fancy dress on your stag/hen do, Pink Monkey would suggest going to this area.

CAIS DO SODRE is located close to the river and used to be the red light district. Similarly bohemian to Bairro Alto do not bother turning up anywhere much before midnight, as this is when the crowds descend. If you want to get a full taste of the area, here are a few of the neighbourhood?s hottest bars and live music venues, perfect for a late-night bar crawl. The clubs here are small and compact and are open until 4pm or 6pm Nightclubs include Jamaica Bar – Retro music, Music Box – House, Tokyo – Rock, Europa – House, Liverpool Bar – Retro cheese

PARQUE DAS NACOES. The futuristic architecture of Eastern Lisbon is a complete contrast to the city’s old quarters. Most of it was built by innovative architecture for Expo 98, the World Fair that took place in Portugal’s capital between May and September of 1998. The area has a number of restaurants, a marina and bars. Well worth a visit.

DOCAS DE SANTO AMARO. The docks area below 25 de Abril Bridge along the river in Alcantara between Baixa and Belem is one of the city’s most pleasant places for a drink in late afternoon and with a lively atmosphere at night. Former warehouses overlooking an attractive yachting marina have been transformed into a multitude of cosmopolitan bars, restaurants, and clubs for all tastes. Pink Monkey recommends the Irish bar, Irish and Co and Hawaii Bar.
